Love this telescope
Reviewed By: Chris (Sterling, VA)
I really do love this little scope. My parent bought this as a Christmas gift for me around 1981-82 and just 2 nights ago I got it out of the closet and showed off the moon through it to my wife (who has never looked through a telescope until then) and she was amazed. Once my son is old enough I'll pass it on to him and hopefully instill a lifelong love of astronomy and the humble feeling that we are just small elements in the vastness of the universe. It's a fantastic gift for kids and something they'll keep for years to come. (it also works just as perfectly as it did all those years ago).

You will use this telescope

Hobbies come and go -- you may or may not be a lifelong stargazer. The cool thing about the Astroscan (I've had mine for about 15 years) is you can leave it in the closet for months (or years) then pull it out one night and use it. No collimation, nothing to adjust -- just open it up and go. Everything is sealed up and "solid state", so there is nothing to break or adjust. The optical quality is good. The telescope is very portable, and its unusual shape actually makes people more apt to look at it -- they can't believe what it will do! When you aren't using it, park it on a table in your living room -- visitors will think it's some kind of art sculpture. I recommend also getting the barlow, an additional eyepiece, and the bag. I could not find a duffle that really fit the unique shape of the telescope -- the ES bag is worth it. Great views of the moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Messier objects. I built a wooden tripod/platform for mine, but most often I've used it on a car hood, deck table, picnic table -- it really can be set up just about anywhere, on just about anything.

awesome

It's portable. I can set it up anywhere. I can see star systems on a night that there are hardly any stars out. And of course, The Moon looks fantastic on any night. Thanks Edmund Scientific...

Absolutly remarkable, and educational as well, as a science teacher, I highly recommend this for teens and pre-teens as well

best scope for the $
Reviewed By: Bob (Chugiak, AK)
This is the best beginner scope ever made, and the easiest to use. For the money, you can't go wrong. I have larger, more expensive scopes from Meade and Celestron but this little Edmund gets far more use. Great views of the moon, star clusters, and Orion Nebula. You won't see a lot of detail on planets but will be able to see the rings of Saturn and Jupiter's moons. Before you lay out big bucks for a larger telescope I would highly recommend this as a first scope, If you already have a bigger scope, you might find the Astroscan a nice addition to your collection.
