We tried direct sunlight, flash lights, incandescent and flourescent lamp bulbs (60W), bicycle lights, candles, and a hair dryer (a suggested experiment in the manual) with no success. Nothing seemed to make the vanes turn even the slightest. Today we finally got it to work when using a 250 Watt arc light from the hardware store meant for illuminating a work area. We placed it 1 1/2 feet from the radiometer and the vanes spun at approximately 240 RPM. It is suggested ages 8 years and up which is appropriate if considering the radiometer is made of glass. However, it wouldn't be appropriate for an 8 year old to handle a 250 Watt light source that can potentially burn them or set fire. I'm quite pleased I was able to share a learning experience with my daugther and the radiometer did what it claimed however I am disappointed with the safety and difficulty in getting it to perform. I don't feel I can let my daugther experiment unattended with the radiometer. My suspicion is the vacuum inside the radiometer is inadequate. - Saturday, November 22, 200837 years and still spinning Reviewed By: NS (Honolulu, Hawaii) I bought a radiometer from Edmund Scientific 37 years ago and it's still spinning by a window at my parents' house (near Seattle). I'm going to buy another one for where I live now. - Friday, August 24, 2007fun and amazing Reviewed By: Greg (Barrington, RI) Great fun for kids of all ages.
