The Stargazer's Choice
The Best-Selling introductory Telescope for Over 30 Years is Now Better!
Now includes a red dot, reflex, sight finder, functional and visually stunning dewcap, improved focusing mechanism and an extra set of replacement pads for the base
The original Edmund Scientific Astroscan® is an affordable, high-performance telescope that is easy-to-use, maintenance-free and completely portable. Its wide field of view, bright images and ease of use make it an excellent telescope for beginner and expert stargazers alike.
The heart of the Astroscan® is its 1/8 wave, overcoated primary parabolic mirror. This results in crisp, clear images without the image-distorting effects of spherical aberration.
The Astroscan® is a Newtonian Rich-Field reflector that provides a breathtaking 3 degrees (or six full moons!) of field, literally making this instrument an open window on the universe. The wide field-of-view makes finding celestial objects far easier than with other telescopes and allows for views of deep sky objects, or groups of objects, that won't even fit into their fields of view.
With the optional Barlow Lens (available separately or included in the Deluxe Package), at 16X you can view the mountains, craters and valleys on the Moon and Jupiter’s four bright satellites, while the 30X eyepiece lets you see Saturn's rings. A host of deep-sky wonders are also visible, including colorful double stars like Albireo in Cygnus, star clusters like the Pleiades in Taurus, nebulae like that in Orion and even galaxies such as that in Andromeda. The Astroscan® really excels, though, when you turn it to deep sky objects like galaxies, nebulae and star clusters...the Pleiades are truly stunning! At higher magnifications, the Astroscan's® images are crisp, clear and powerful.

The Astroscan® has a unique design that won it the 1976 Industrial Design Award. It eliminates the cumbersome and complicated mounts typical of most telescopes. Simply place its padded base on any firm, flat surface and you are immediately ready to observe. Its motions are positive and natural, with nothing to tighten or adjust. It's simple enough for a child to use the first time out.

Overall Rating: and share your thoughts with other customers Sort Reviews: Newest | Oldest | Highest Rating | Lowest Rating - Thursday, September 03, 2009 Love this telescope Reviewed By: Chris (Sterling, VA) I really do love this little scope. My parent bought this as a Christmas gift for me around 1981-82 and just 2 nights ago I got it out of the closet and showed off the moon through it to my wife (who has never looked through a telescope until then) and she was amazed.
Once my son is old enough I'll pass it on to him and hopefully instill a lifelong love of astronomy and the humble feeling that we are just small elements in the vastness of the universe.
It's a fantastic gift for kids and something they'll keep for years to come.
(it also works just as perfectly as it did all those years ago). - Thursday, August 06, 2009 You will use this telescope Reviewed By: DeWayne (Tallahassee, FL) Hobbies come and go -- you may or may not be a lifelong stargazer. The cool thing about the Astroscan (I've had mine for about 15 years) is you can leave it in the closet for months (or years) then pull it out one night and use it. No collimation, nothing to adjust -- just open it up and go. Everything is sealed up and "solid state", so there is nothing to break or adjust.
The optical quality is good. The telescope is very portable, and its unusual shape actually makes people more apt to look at it -- they can't believe what it will do! When you aren't using it, park it on a table in your living room -- visitors will think it's some kind of art sculpture.
I recommend also getting the barlow, an additional eyepiece, and the bag. I could not find a duffle that really fit the unique shape of the telescope -- the ES bag is worth it. Great views of the moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Messier objects.
I built a wooden tripod/platform for mine, but most often I've used it on a car hood, deck table, picnic table -- it really can be set up just about anywhere, on just about anything. - Sunday, August 02, 2009 awesome Reviewed By: Dave (Staten Island , New York) It's portable. I can set it up anywhere. I can see star systems on a night that there are hardly any stars out. And of course, The Moon looks fantastic on any night. Thanks Edmund Scientific... Read More Reviews
