NEW! Astroscan® Plus Telescope

The Stargazer's Choice

The Best-Selling introductory Telescope for Over 30 Years is Now Better!

Now includes a red dot, reflex, sight finder, functional and visually stunning dewcap, improved focusing mechanism and an extra set of replacement pads for the base

The original Edmund Scientific Astroscan® is an affordable, high-performance telescope that is easy-to-use, maintenance-free and completely portable. Its wide field of view, bright images and ease of use make it an excellent telescope for beginner and expert stargazers alike.

The heart of the Astroscan® is its 1/8 wave, overcoated primary parabolic mirror. This results in crisp, clear images without the image-distorting effects of spherical aberration.

The Astroscan® is a Newtonian Rich-Field reflector that provides a breathtaking 3 degrees (or six full moons!) of field, literally making this instrument an open window on the universe. The wide field-of-view makes finding celestial objects far easier than with other telescopes and allows for views of deep sky objects, or groups of objects, that won't even fit into their fields of view.

Astroscan® TelescopeWith the optional Barlow Lens (available separately or included in the Deluxe Package), at 16X you can view the mountains, craters and valleys on the Moon and Jupiter’s four bright satellites, while the 30X eyepiece lets you see Saturn's rings. A host of deep-sky wonders are also visible, including colorful double stars like Albireo in Cygnus, star clusters like the Pleiades in Taurus, nebulae like that in Orion and even galaxies such as that in Andromeda. The Astroscan® really excels, though, when you turn it to deep sky objects like galaxies, nebulae and star clusters...the Pleiades are truly stunning! At higher magnifications, the Astroscan's® images are crisp, clear and powerful.

Astroscan® Telescope The Astroscan® has a unique design that won it the 1976 Industrial Design Award. It eliminates the cumbersome and complicated mounts typical of most telescopes. Simply place its padded base on any firm, flat surface and you are immediately ready to observe. Its motions are positive and natural, with nothing to tighten or adjust. It's simple enough for a child to use the first time out.

Other Features for Astronomical Excellence Include:
  • Ultra-Portability with quick and easy set-up
  • Extreme Stability - it is the most vibration-free and wind resistant portable made.
  • Air Travel Capable - it can fly as carry-on and will fit in an overhead compartment

  • Durable and Easy to Maintain - made of high impact ABS plastic with permanently aligned and sealed optics - a plus for those with children

Awesome!

The Astroscan is not just alot of fun to own and use, it provides superb views of many deep-sky objects. Just using the provided eyepieces, tonight I've seen numerous star clusters and a few nebulae including the Trifid (M 21), M 4 near Antares, the Wild Duck Cluster, and more. With patience, and a good night for seeing, you won't be disappointed! I'm viewing within the city limits with a slightly grey sky. I can hardly wait to travel a few miles away and really have fun with a very dark sky. I used to own a 10" Dobsonian, and although the Astroscan is smaller, it's optics are superb! Stars resolved nicely within the limits of it's optics. If you want a fun, take-along quality 'scope, go ahead and purchase the Astroscan! (customer service is top-notch, too!)

This is our 2nd telescope.......but the first REAL telescope. The clarity is outstanding, the quality of the optics are WAY beyond what I expected and the size and durability, excellent. My 10yr old son and I have enjoyed using this telescope JUST as much as we have enjoyed going to star parties at our college observatory. We will enjoy this for MANY years!

A near perfect scope
Reviewed By: James  (Boston, MA)
Excellent design, execution, and optics. I had always wanted a richest-field telescope after cutting my teeth on a 3.5-inch Sky Scope (f/10 Newtonian) years ago. Apparently the dew cap and finder were added after this scope was originally designed, because their combined weight causes the unit to slip in its cradle when viewing objects in the lower half of the sky. To compensate, I just remove the dew cap. I'm very satisfied, If you use a camera tripod, make sure that it is very sturdy. The cradle that comes with the scope attaches to any standard tripod, but the weight of the scope requires that the tripod be substantial.
