Nitinol is a shape-memory alloy actuator wire. Its operation resembles that of a muscle, i.e., iit contracts when heated. Passing an electric current through the wire heats the wire to its transition temperature.
When the electric current is removed and the wire cools, it can easily be stretched back to its original length. 12" long, .006 diameter.
