Astroscan Telescope

Astroscan Telescope
The Stargazer's Choice

Best-Selling introductory telescope for Over 30 Years!

The original Edmund Scientific Astroscan is an inexpensive, high-performance telescope that is easy-to-use, maintenance-free and completely portable. Its wide field of view, beautiful images and ease of use make it an excellent telescope for beginner and expert stargazers alike.

The heart of the Astroscan is its 1/8 wave, overcoated primary parabolic mirror. Where other telescopes use an inexpensive spherical mirror, the Astroscan's parabolic mirror has a deeper, more complex figure that focuses all incoming light rays to the same point. This results in crisp, clear images without any of distorting effects of spherical mirror aberration.

The Astroscan is a Newtonian Rich-Field reflector that provides a breathtaking 3 degrees (or six full moons) of field, literally making this instrument an open window to the universe. The wide field-of-view makes finding astronomical objects far easier than with other telescopes and allows for the best views of deep sky objects, or groups of objects, that won't even fit into the fields of other telescopes.

With the optional Barlow Lens (available separately or included in the Deluxe Package), you can view Saturn's rings and the Cloud bands of Jupiter. The Astroscan really excels, though, when you turn it to deep sky objects like galaxies, nebulae and star clusters...the Pleiades are truly stunning! At higher magnifications, the Astroscan's images are crisp, clear and powerful.

Astroscan Telescope The Astroscan has a unique design that won it the 1976 Industrial Design Award. Its creative design has eliminated the cumbersome and complicated mounts typical of most telescopes. Simply place its padded base on any firm, flat surface and you are immediately ready to observe. Its motions are positive and natural, with nothing to tighten or adjust. It's simple enough for a child to use the first time out.

Other Features for Astronomical Excellence Include:
  • Ultra-Portability with quick and easy set-up
  • Extreme Stability - it is the most vibration-free and wind resistant portable made.
  • Air Travel Capable - it can fly as carry-on and will fit in an overhead compartment
  • Smooth Motions - hand tracking is easy and smooth, even fast moving objects can be followed without difficulty
  • Durable and Easy to Maintain - made of high impact ABS plastic with permanently aligned and sealed optics - a plus for those with children
  • Easy to Use -intuitive, great first telescope - wonderful family scope
  • Requires no collimation or other maintenance

Good Old Astroscan
Reviewed By: Paulo Fabricio (Frankfurt , Germany)
My first Astroscan was purchased in 1982. It was love at first sight and first view through this great scope. I now purchased my 4th Astroscan and first China made one.(The others were made in the USA. Opticaly I could not find any difference so far. But the US made ones had a more solid construction and better finish. I have a larger and more complex scope but the Astroscan was always and will always be the nice scope I use most.It would be great If Edmund would ship them also outside the USA. I could recommend it to so many people I see getting frustrated with beginner scopes purchased in department stores.

Astroscan telescope
Reviewed By: Andy Buschmann (Batesville, Arkansas)
I bought my Astroscan in approximately 1976. The mirror had a defect of some kind- a grey film covered the surface. I sent it back and Edmund sent another which I've had all these years. At one point the primary mirror became detached and Edmund fixed it promptly. The great thing about this little telescope is the absoultely no hassle set-up and use. The images are nice and sharp and the wide field with the 16 power eyepiece is better than high power in most cases. (My telescope didn't come with two eyepieces as it does now). When my granddaughter gets a little older I may get her one.
