Find-a-Mineral Lab Activity

A geological dig that fits on a desktop!

Become a geoscience detective and uncover clues hidden in specially prepared gravel!

This activity is a challenging introduction to the techniques of mineral identification. You can find numerous small chips of twelve common minerals in a natural gravel, then observe and test their physical properties. Three common rock samples are also included to illustrate how small mineral grains are found as constituents of various rock types.

Each set comes with a one-pound bag of concentrated mineral gravel, streak plate, magnet, magnifier, sorting tray, forceps, rock samples, a teacher's guide, and student copy-master, all contained in a convenient storage box. Average chip size: 3/8"-1/2".

For extra added value, don't forget about our "Find-a-" Series 4-pack! Included are the Find-a-Mineral Lab Activity Find-a-Rock Lab Activity, Find-a-Fossil Lab Activity, and Find-a-Fluorescent Mineral Lab Activity. Buy all 4 kits and save!

Needs Directions
Reviewed By: Mom of 8 yr old (Pittsburgh, PA)
Ordered this for my kid and the sheet that came with it didn't mention the magnet--had to look on the site to figure out what that was and still don't know why it is included--nothing in the sheet given explains this. The "directions" if you can call them that seem to come from a college text. I think the explanation could be easier for those new to this or hobbyists. This is for someone who already knows their stuff.
