One of nature’s most durable gemstones, the name sapphire is derived from the Greek word for blue (sappheiros). The ancient Persians believed the Earth rested on a giant sapphire whose reflection gave the heavens their blue color.

Sapphires actually come in a variety of colors, but blue is perhaps the most stunning and well known. Like its sister corundum variety, ruby, sapphires are highly prized and were credited by the ancients to ward off evil spirits and poisons.
