Quick-and-Ready Stargazing
Reviewed By: J Mullaney (Long Neck, Delaware)
Refracting telescopes are making a big comeback with stargazers in this day of large reflecting telescopes and sophisticated compound catadioptrics — and with good reason. They require no optical adjustment and their unobstructed light path (no secondary mirror in the way) deliver razor-sharp images. And they are essentially ready for instant use, requiring little or no “cool-down” time to the night air. Here’s an opportunity to experience this for yourself and at a very affordable price. The SkyScout 90mm f/7 achromatic objective delivers wide, bright, crisp views of celestial objects ranging from the Moon and planets to deep-sky wonders. It comes equipped with two eyepieces providing glorious vistas of the sky at 16x and more detailed views at 66x. (Higher magnifications can be achieved with the addition of the optional Edmund Barlow lens.) The pan-handle clutch control of this altazimuth-style tripod mounted telescope makes pointing smooth and easy. In addition, this scope was designed for use with the amazing SkyScout Personal Planetarium (available as an optional accessory from Edmund Scientifics). Mounting directly onto the optical tube, its “point and click” operation using GPS technology automatically identifies wherever the scope itself is aimed at — or leads you with directional arrows to any object contained within its menu. And it also includes audio and text information about the most popular targets! If you already own a larger instrument, the SkyScout 90 makes an ideal second scope for quick-and-ready stargazing.
